Santorini
In proportion to the size of the island, Santorini is the only place on the whole planet with so many wineries. It is undoubtedly Greece's top destination for wine tourism.
On an area of only 7,619 ha (76,19 km2), there are more than 18 wineries to visit. All wineries are characterized by a warm and friendly atmosphere and their owners are always happy to offer wine tasting and tours around their facilities. This is the place where wine lovers can witness the traditional vinification process from beginning to end.
Santorini cultivates nine indigenous grape varieties, including the famous Assyrtiko. Traces of this dry white wine were found in a prehistoric village excavated at Akrotiri, buried under the volcanic eruption that once sank half the island.
The history of Santorini is famous around the globe.
But what is particularly unique and not widely known about it is the vinification process; how the vines form a basket with the grapes growing in the center so as to protect them from the harsh Aegean winds.
Santorini is the perfect place to make a wine tour, choosing one, or more, of the 18 wineries that are in close proximity to one another. This will definitely be an experience of a lifetime.
